North Coast World Earth Day 2020
ABOUT: World Earth Day recognises its 50th year in 2020. It makes you wonder, if we had listened and acted back in 1970 when the campaign for environmental awareness was first realised, what impact would this have had on the planet and oceans today?
This year, the north coast schools and community will do their part in recognising the increasing need for environmental awareness and change. We are required to continue our efforts in keeping our coastline free from litter and we need to look beyond the obvious - focusing on what lies beneath our seas and the micro plastics that litter our oceans and beaches.
North Coast World Earth Day 2020 is an educational environmental awareness campaign involving Portrush Yacht Club, Coast Guard, RNLI and Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council collaborating with local primary schools.
KEY MESSAGES: We aim to send out strong and sometimes less publicised messages to the children and the local community during these events.
1. Litter left on or washed up on our beaches represents only part of the problem that affects our coastlines.
2. The litter in our seas is having a devastating impact on our marine environment – to be witnessed first-hand as part of the underwater harbour clean (led by Skerries Scuba Club).
3. Micro plastics are to be the focus of the community beach clean. Participants are to collect small plastic items found on the beach in a recyclable milk carton. We hope to signify the scale of this problem by filling an aquarium with all returned plastic.
EVENTS: We plan to hold two key events as part of this campaign and as a community, we are developing lots of exciting new initiatives around these key dates:
Wednesday 22nd April, West Strand, 11am - The local schools will take part in their ‘‘Youthstrike4climate’’ campaign on the West Strand, Portrush.
Saturday 25th April, Portrush Yacht Club, 11am - A community beach clean (focus on micro plastics) and harbour clean (underwater litter focus led by Skerrie scuba club).
The events on Saturday 25th April will be followed by hot chocolate/toasted marshmallows, entertainment, crafts and children’s art display at Portrush Yacht Club. The Coastguard, RNLI, PSNI, Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council, Scubapro and the local press have all pledged their support of these events.
